Pocahontas girls win section crown

PETERSBURG – Pocahontas County reeled off 30 first-quarter points Saturday to roll past Pendleton County, 61-42, in the Class A, Region II, Section 2 title game.

The Lady Warriors went on a 21-0 run in the first quarter, en route to a 45-16 lead at halftime. Pendleton tried to bounce back in the second half, outscoring Pocahontas, 26-16, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit.

Tristin Day was the top scorer for Pocahontas County with 21 points, nailing four 3-pointers in the contest.

She also contributed six rebounds and four steals.

Melissa Murphy also had an outstanding performance, adding 18 points, six rebounds and six assists to the effort.

Senior guard Kaylee Edwards paced the Wildcats with 17 points. Michaela Raines scored seven points and Megan Bowers and Megan Keller added five points each. Center Hillary Ord grabbed eight rebounds and scored six points.

Pocahontas County (14-8) will host Notre Dame (13-10) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a regional final.
