SOLID OPENER

ELKINS – Even though the season is just getting started, Elkins coach Adam Roth knows the importance of winning conference games – especially at home.

The Tigers did just that on Thursday night, claiming an 8-1 victory over Big 10 foe Lincoln at the Elkins High School Field.

“It was nice to get a win in the home opener,” Roth said. “Our first goal is to finish as high as we can in the Big 10, and to get that first conference victory is important.”

Elkins, which was swept by Musselman over the weekend, used the pitching and hitting of Colby Gainer to take down the Cougars.

The senior took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a pair of hits and one run. He finished with nine strikeouts and walked just two.

Gainer helped his cause with an RBI double in the third and later added a run-producing sacrifice fly that plated Garrett Riggleman.

Elkins had a 4-1 lead before breaking the game open in the sixth with four runs, taking advantage of four walks, an RBI double by Cole Harlan and a Cameron Clarkson single that chased home a run.

Elkins is scheduled to play a pair of games at home on Saturday, facing St. Marys at 1 p.m. and Tygarts Valley at 6 p.m.

“We’re hoping the weather cooperates and allows us to get those two games in on Saturday,” Roth said.

Lincoln dropped to 0-1.
