Thompson twirls no-hitter for Vikes

PETERSBURG – Marley Thompson tossed a no-hitter to lead Petersburg to a 2-0 win over East Hardy on Thursday.

Thompson, a senior, struck out 12 and didn’t issue a walk. An error led to the Cougars’ lone base runner of the game.

The Vikings (1-0) picked up an unearned run in the first and added their second run in the fifth on three straight singles by Callie Wisnewski, Cassidy Hedrick and Brooke Hott.

Cheyenne Earle and Hott both had two singles on the day for Petersburg.

Jodie Funkhouser had a solid showing on the mound for East Hardy, allowing seven hits, fanning six and walking one.

The Vikings will travel to Allegany, Md., at 4 p.m. today in non-conference play, while the Cougars are slated to play in the Strasburg, Va., tournament today and Saturday.
