ABU falls to Mercyhurst in lacrosse action
PHILIPPI – Nationally ranked Mercyhurst University blew threw Philippi Monday, picking up a 17-3 decision over Alderson Broaddus University in men’s lacrosse.
Mercyhurst is currently ranked No. 4 in NCAA DII rankings.
The Lakers lit up the scoreboard at the 11:52 mark of the first period with a Jake McAndrew goal. Brady Heseltine pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal at 11:44.
In an effort to keep pace, ABU’s Connar Abrams pulled the Battlers to within one point when he slammed a Joe Ravenell pass into the back of the net.
However, Mercyhurst answered with seven straight goals, including a hat trick from Trevor Vargo.
The score was 9-1 at intermission.
ABU got the second half scoring started when Nick Williams netted an unassisted goal with 12:02 left in the game.
The Lakers’ high-powered offense cranked it up again, this time going on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 16-2 with about 4 minutes left to play.
Williams stopped the Laker rally with his second unassisted tally, making the score 16-3.
Mercyhurst’s Stephen Romas capped the scoring with a goal at 1:11
Goalie Michael Grace picked up the win for Mercyhurst, making three saves.
Battlers’ goalie Jay Kuhn took the loss. He made 22 saves in the contest.

Heseltine led the Mercyhurst offense with five points on four goals and one assist. McAndrew and Vargo also picked up five points each on three goals and two helpers.
The Battlers return to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday when they host Seton Hill University.
