Area athletes fare well at Lewis meet

WESTON – The Bridgeport girls and Martinsburg boys captured team titles at the Larry Conaway Invitational Friday at Lewis County High School.

Bridgeport finished with 96 points in the girls event, while Buckhannon-Upshur (85) was second and Tucker County third (75). Elkins was ninth with 20 points.

Mackenzie Leigh led the Bucs with first-place finishes in the shot put (40-02) and discus (139-05), while teammate Katy Riley captured the pole vault with an effort of 8 feet.

Taking titles for the Mountain Lions were Olivia Miller in the high jump (4-10), the shuttle hurdle relay team (Kelsey Kyle, Miller, Kylie Moore and Elizabeth Nichols) in a time of 1:10.64 and Kyle in the 300 hurdles (50.68).

Jontasia Sitton placed third in the shot put to lead the Tigers.

Martinsburg racked up 110 points to outdistance Bridgeport and Huntington (79) in the boys race. B-U was fourth with 62 points, while Lewis County (54) was fifth, Tucker County (47) sixth and Elkins (27) ninth.

Dustin Martin captured the high jump (5-8), 110 hurdles (15.29) and 300 hurdles (40.87) to lead the Minutemen.

The Elkins 800 relay team, meanwhile, remained undefeated on the season. The unit, which is comprised of Matt Wallace, Remington Knight, Austin Hamrick and Chris Bodkin, cleared the course in a time of 8:39.53 to easily outdistance runner-up Bridgeport by 24

seconds.

The Bucs had two first-place finishers – Seth Cutright in the 400 with a time of 52.14 and Marcus Lofton in the long jump (20-00).

Elkins will visit Buckhannon-Upshur at 4 p.m. Tuesday for a meet.
