Colts defeat Mountaineers
CLARKSBURG – Al Johnson scored six runs Monday to help Philip Barbour defeat Liberty in both ends of a Big 10 Conference double header.
“We kept our composure in game one and battled back,” PB coach Jonathan Carpenter said. “Sage (Cline) didn’t have his best stuff, but he kept us in the game. We put a couple of runs across to get the win.
“In game two, we just took advantage of opportunities. Sean (Curtis) threw the ball well also,” Carpenter said.
The Colts won game one 6-4. Cline pitched the complete game to earn the victory. He gave up four runs on nine hits and struck out two batters.
Ty Wickline took the loss for the Mountaineers. He gave up six runs on 10 hits and struck out nine
Johnson paced the offense for the Colts, going 1 for 2 with four runs scored and two stolen bases. Bai Carpenter was 2 for 3 and Cline was 3 for 4 with a double and a stolen base.
The Colt were down 4-3, but a three-run sixth inning pushed the team to victory. In that stanza, Tyler Baldwin hit a two-RBI single to score Chris Neville and Johnson.
In game two, the Colts defeated Liberty, 11-4.
Sean Curtis pitched the complete game to notch the victory. He gave up four runs on six hits and struck out three. At the plate, he was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
Jonathan Kreyenbuhl pitched 3 1/3 innings to take the loss. He gave up eight runs on seven hits and walked five batters.
The Colts utilized a six-run fourth inning to seal the victory in game two. In that inning, Jake Marsh and Baldwin both connected for two RBI doubles. Marsh finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Baldwin finished the game 1 for 5 with two RBIs.
Johnson also gave another outstanding performance, going 1 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Thomas Surock, Michael Drummond and Jorden Rollyson scored the runs for the Mountaineers.
The Colts (6-9) host Grafton at 4:30 p.m. today.
