EHS soccer standout signs with D&E

ELKINS – An Elkins High School soccer standout plans to continue playing in her hometown. Isabella Nieves signed a national letter of intent Monday to play soccer at Davis & Elkins College next season.

EHS Coach Scott Cutright says Nieves played a key role in the Lady Tigers winning the sectional championship. The team finished the regular season with a 14-4-3 record and lost to Washington, 1-0, in the Region II title game.

“She was an integral part of what we were able to accomplish this year,” Cutright said. “She was one of the senior captains and a great team leader. We won the sectional title for the first time in eight years, so it was a real good year for us. She was a big part of it.”

Cutright expects Nieves to perform well at the next level. He said she has the speed and skills to make an immediate impact.

“I think she will do well at D&E,” Cutright said. “I think it will be an easy transition for her to move to the next level. She has tremendous speed and that will help her at the college level.”

As a mid-fielder, Nieves earned first-team All Big 10 Conference and second-team All-State accolades this season.

“I’m very excited to play at the next level,” Nieves said. “I’m also excited to be able to stay in the community. Soccer is really big in Elkins and I’m super excited to stay and play here. I can’t wait to take the next step.”

Nieves told The Inter-Mountain she intends to major in exercise science.

“Academically, D&E fits well,” Nieves said. “They have a great pre-physical therapy program and I really like that. Also, the coach kept calling me and it seemed like he really wanted me to play. Everything just seems like it fell into place.”
