Elkins High beats Buckhannon-Uphur in tennis action

ELKINS – The Elkins High School tennis teams defeated Buckhannon Upshur Monday in Big 10 Conference play at Davis & Elkins College.

The Tiger boys and girls teams both claimed 7-0


“This was both a conference and regional win for us, so it was big,” EHS coach Brandon Simmons said. “It seems like we’ve really started clicking. We played some good tennis coming off spring break. Everybody is finding their groove and getting ready for sectionals.”

Earning wins for the Tiger boys in singles were No. 1 Taylor Stump over Justin Hyre, 8-2; No. 2 Ryan Henson over Ethan Hull, 8-3; No. 3 Mason Schoonover over Sebastian Reger, 8-1; and No. 4 Linkoln Barger over David Maxwell, 8-2.

In doubles, No. 1 Stump and Henson defeated Hyre-Hull, 8-4; No. 2 Schoonover-Barger defeated Reger-Maxwell, 8-4; and No. 3 Corey Crumm and Mason Ariola defeated Chad Christenson and Brandon Kennedy, 8-0.

The EHS girls also claimed a 7-0 decision. No. 1 Christine Zurbuch defeated Angie Botzet, 8-0; No. 2 Caitlin Gutta defeated Sara Pappas, 8-1; No. 3 Bradley Gutta defeated Maddie Nanners, 8-3; and No. 4 Kayla Gainer defeated Megan Russell, 8-0.

Zurbuch-Gainer defeated Pappas-Nanners in No. 1 doubles, while the Gutta sisters teamed up in No. 2 doubles to defeat Botzet-Russell, 8-3, and No. 3 Josalin Hepler-Macy Amos defeated Serina Hovis-Amber Fealy, 8-2.
