Elkins High’s Henson inks to play soccer at Wesleyan

ELKINS – Elkins High School’s Ryan Henson signed a national letter of intent Friday to play soccer at West Virginia Wesleyan next season.

“I immediately fell in love with the campus,” Henson said. “I also love the coaching staff. My travel team coach (Keith Moran) is an assistant coach there also, so there is some familiarity. He’s really been a big influence on me and taught me a lot about the game.”

While in high school, Henson earned Honorable Mention All-State as a senior and second team All State as a junior. He also earned first team All Big 10 Conference his junior season. Henson also plays soccer for the Mid-State Soccer Club.

“Wesleyan has a great tradition of being in the Division II playoffs,” Henson said. “They’ve also had a lot of All-Americans and won their conference multiple times. I love everything about the program.”

Henson plays midfield and defense. He is excited to make the jump to the college ranks.

“I think the biggest difference will be the speed and quickness,” Henson said. “I believe I can make the transition. I’m ready to step my game up and take it to the next level.”

EHS coach Andy Montgomery believes Henson will make a smooth transition to playing at the college level.

“Ryan has demonstrated a passion and great understanding of the game and has been a dominating defensive presence on the field during his high school career,” Montgomery said. “These are the skills that will serve him well on the college field.”

Henson is the stepson of Hayes Shelton and son of Elizabeth Shelton. He is also a member of the tennis team and Young Life and served as circuit clerk at American Legion Mountaineer Boys State.
