Elkins tennis teams earn wins against Senior

ELKINS – The Elkins High school tennis teams defeated Fairmont Senior Tuesday in Big 10 Conference play at Davis &?Elkins College.

The Tiger boys claimed a 6-1 victory. Earning wins for EHS in singles were No. 2 Ryan Henson over Blake Hoke, 8-6; No. 3 Mason Schoonover over Taylor Campbell, 8-2; and No. 4 Linkoln Barger over Trey Giorcelli.

In doubles, No. 1Taylor Stump and Henson defeated Logan Orton-Hoke, 8-2; No. 2 Schoover-Barger defeated Campbell-Giorcelli, 8-4; and No. 3 Mason Ariola-Corey Crumm defeated Isaac Cutright-Gage Monteon, 8-0.

The EHS girls claimed a 7-0 decision. No. 1 Christine Zurbuch defeated Alissa Link, 8-1; No. 2 Caitlin Gutta defeated Megan Branch, 8-5; No. 3 Bradley Gutta defeated Morgan Hoke, 8-2; and No. 4 Kayla Gainer defeated Eviara Barnes, 8-0.

Zurbuch-Gainer defeated Link-Branch in No. 1 doubles, while the Gutta sisters teamed up in No. 2 doubles to defeat Hoke-Barnes, 8-3, and No. 3 Josalin Hepler-Macy Amos defeated Megan Stephenson-Jassmine Johnson, 8-4.

“This was another good win for us,” Elkins coach Brandon Simmons said. “We are now 2-0 in (the Big 10) conference.

“Fairmont Senior has a young team and I think our experience helped us pull out the close matches.”

The Tigers will visit East Fairmont at 4 p.m. Thursday for another league match.
