Ennis, Hampshire edge Vikings, 3-2

PETERSBURG – Shane Ennis struck out 10 batters Thursday to help Hampshire squeeze past Petersburg, 3-2.

“We faced one of the best pitchers in West Virginia tonight,” Vikings coach Bobby Jack Harman said. “Some pre-season polls had him picked for player of the year and he’s that good. However, Ryan Colaw matched him for us. We had five hits and they had four. Overall it was a good high school game. It was a good competition for both teams.”

Ennis pitched the complete game for the victory, giving up two runs on five hits.

Colaw took the loss. He pitched six innings, giving up four hits and striking out six batters.

Senior Dane Heavener paced the Trojans, going 3 for 4 with three stolen bases and a run scored. Brandon Timbrook went 1 for 3 with a two RBI double.

For the Vikings, Ryan Vanmeter went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Trevor Harman went 1 for 2 with an RBI and Jace Shanholtz went 0 for 2 with an RBI.

Petersburg (5-6) will travel to Liberty at 4 p.m. today for a non-conference doubleheader.
