Falling Short

ELKINS – An early deficit was too much for Elkins to overcome in a 6-4 setback to Preston Tuesday night in Big 10 Conference play at Elkins Middle School.

The loss snapped the Tigers’ six-game winning streak.

“It was hard to stomach this loss after winning two games over the weekend against a good East Hardy team,” Elkins coach Ashley Cameron said. “Our team underestimated Preston and we came out flat in the first two

innings.”

The Knights plated all six of their runs over the first three innings, including a three-run outburst in the third to build a 6-1 cushion.

Emily Knotts had a two-run double in the third, while Beth Sawyer added a run-producing single.

The Tigers battled back with three runs over the fifth and sixth innings before the rally fell short in the seventh inning.

Elkins had a base runner reach in the final frame but Preston catcher Makala Taylor threw her out at third base after retrieving a wild pitch.

“Our girls fought hard to get us back in the game,” Cameron said. “Unfortunately, the deficit was too big. I was happy, though, that the girls never gave up and kept fighting until the end.

“I hope they can take that fight into (today’s) game and continue to be hungry for more wins.”

Korri Evans took the loss in four innings of action. She gave up six runs -only one being earned – on 10 hits, while striking out two and walking one.

Alyssa Harper finished in relief, not allowing a hit and fanning three in three innings of action.

Amy Fincham led the Tigers at the dish with two doubles, while Madison Collett was 2 for 3, Haley Collett 1 for 3 with a RBI, Jordan Hart 1 for 4 and Taylor Pingley 1 for 1.

Tiffany Barnett earned the victory for the Knights.

Elkins (6-2) will travel to Big 10 Conference rival Buckhannon-Upshur at 5 p.m. today.
