Gainer pitches, hits Elkins to 5-4 victory

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Colby Gainer earned the win on the mound and also cracked a three-run homer to lead Elkins to a 5-4 win over Robert E. Lee Academy (S.C.) on Tuesday.

Gainer went all seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking two.

Logan Phillips also was 2 for 3 with a RBI and Kollin Hopwood 2 for 3 for the Tigers.

Elkins (6-4) will face Greenbrier West at 9 a.m. today.

High school softball

Tigers drops DH

ELKINS – The Elkins High School softball team dropped a pair of close games to Liberty Monday at Elkins Middle School.

The Tigers lost the opener, 6-5, and the nightcap by a count of 7-6.

In the opener, Taylor Pingley had a homer for the Tigers, while Amy Fincham was 2 for 4, Sydney Leary 2 for 3 and Haley Collett 3 for 3.

In the second game, the contest was tied 6-6 before the Mountaineers pushed home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh

inning.

The Tigers had the bases loaded and not outs in the top of the seventh but were unable to score.

Leading Elkins at the plate were Leary (2 for 3), Jordan Hart (2 for 4), Haley Collett (3 for 4), Madison Collett (4 for 4) and Katy Reed (2 for 4).

“Both games were very competitive and tough losses for us,” Tigers coach Ashley Cameron said. “Both teams hit well and battled the entire night.

“Alyssa Harper pitched well in both games and kept us in the race the entire 14 innings.”

On Saturday, Elkins swept Hampshire by scores of 10-0 in five innings in the opener and 14-7 in the second game.

Larel Teter and Hart each had two RBIs in the opener, while Amy Fincham and Hart knocked in two runs each in the nightcap.

Harper earned the win in both games.

Elkins (8-5) is scheduled to visit East Fairmont at 5 p.m. today.

College golf

D&E men place eighth

INDIANA, Pa. – The Davis & Elkins College golf team placed eighth out of 19 teams at the IUP Invitational.

The Senators finished with a two-day score of 597 (294-303).

Ian Clark posted a two-day total of 145 for D&E, while Evan DeGrazia carded a 149, Alistair Cameron a 150 and Tristain Myers a 156.

IUP won the event with a 573, led by low-medalist Kenneth Sames, who shot a 140.

D&E will compete in the G-MAC championships on Tuesday and Wednesday.

AB women place fourth

MAINEVILLE, Ohio – The Alderson Broaddus women’s golf team finished fourth at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships.

The tournament was scheduled for two rounds, but snow forced the second round to be cancelled ending the championships after 18 holes on Monday at TPC River’s Bend Golf Course.

Sophomore Natalie Perry was AB’s low scorer, notching a 90, which was good for a seventh place.

Emily Cunningham finished in 18th with a 103. Right behind her was Camron Jones with a 105 in 19th and Julia Heser in 20th shooting a 107. Domonique Johnson rounded out the scoring for the Battlers with a 21st place finish with a 108.

Trevecca Nazarene took the team title with a final score of 345.

Kaylon King was the medalist for Trojans with an 82.
