Gainer’s relief effort helps Tigers trip RCB, 3-1

CLARKSBURG – In his first varsity appearance, freshman David Gainer pitched four innings of relief Wednesday to pick up the win for Elkins against Robert C. Byrd, 3-1.

“It was nice to see David come in and give such a good solid performance,” Tigers coach Adam Roth said. “We played solid defense and our pitchers pitched well. The defense was able to keep the lead through the end. It was a good team win.”

Gainer stuck out seven batters, giving up zero hits, zero runs and one walk.

Brent Norman pitched five innings in taking the loss. He gave up three runs on seven hits, striking out two and walking two.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard first, when senior Cameron Clarkson doubled to score Logan Phillips in the second inning.

Garrett Riggleman then scored on a ground out by Daniel Crawford to put Elkins up by a score of 2-0.

Tyler Shreve led off the third inning with a double. He scored on a single by Phillips to make the score 3-0.

The Eagles found their only run on a single by Colton Bonnett that scored Caden Wetzel in the bottom of the third inning.

Bonnett had the only hit of the evening for RCB.
