Late rally lifts Wildcats

PETERSBURG – Pendleton County scored four runs in the eighth inning Wednesday to defeat Petersburg, 12-8, in Potomac Valley Conference action.

“We got off to a nice start,” Wildcats coach Sam Yokum said. “We had an 8-3 lead going into the sixth inning. We’ve had trouble lately closing games. Petersburg came out hitting and the next thing you know, the game was tied. We hung in there and fought for the win. That was big.”

Cody Lambert earned the win for Pendleton County. He gave up one hit in two innings and struck out one batter.

Ryan Vanmeter took the loss. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up eight hits and striking out one batter.

“We started off slow and fell behind early,” Petersburg coach Bobby Jack Harman said. “We came back and pulled out a big inning, but we couldn’t hold it. They had 15 hits and we had 10. We got out-hit.”

Sophomore Tim Hevener singled in the eighth inning to score Luke Cooper and jump-start the four-run rally that sealed the victory for Pendleton County.

Hevener finished the day 4 for 5 with four RBIs. Trey Cooper also had a big game, going 4 for 5 with a double and an RBI.
