Lewis County 7, PB 6, 10 innings

PHILIPPI – Luke Pudder drove home the winning run Monday to help Lewis County defeat conference foe Philip Barbour, 7-6, in 10 innings.

“We squandered too many chances,” PBHS coach Jonathan Carpenter said. “We gave up 13 walks. When you put people on base, they are going to find a way to score. However, I do like the way we responded to opportunities. We just couldn’t capitalize. I think we are a good ball club and we are headed in the right direction.

“We just have to capitalize when we have the opportunity.”

The Colts got on the scoreboard first when Jacob Marsh hit a solo home run in the second inning.

Lewis County scored one run in the third inning and three more in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

The Colts responded with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-4 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Colts walked three straight batters to load the bases. Two runners then scored on a fielder’s choices to give Lewis County a 6-5 advantage.

However, in the bottom of the inning, Bai Carpenter hit a single that scored Shawn Curtis to tie the score and send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the 10th inning, Dylan Gump reached on an error for Lewis County.

A passed ball moved him to second and a single by Pudder drove him home with the winning run.

Joe Nichols pitched two innings in relief to earn the victory for the Minutemen. While on the mound, Nichols gave up two hits and struck out three batters.

Pudder started the game, but went 5 2/3 innings before bowing out to Nichols. Pudder struck out 10 batters and gave up four hits.

Marsh came on in relief and surrendered the loss for the Colts. He pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up one run and one hit.

The Colts will play Fairmont Senior today at 7 p.m. at North Marion High School, while Lewis County hosts Lincoln at 7 p.m. today.
