Vikings capture pair of wins in MHS tourney

MOOREFIELD – Petersburg ran its record to 9-1 on the season with a pair of wins in the Bub Riggleman Memorial Tournament on Friday.

The Vikings defeated Martinsburg 15-1 in the first game as Cassidy Hedrick had three RBIs, including a pair of run-producing doubles.

Callie Wisnewski added a pair of singles and an RBI, while Haley Swick had two RBIs and Brittani Bible a solo homer.

Marley Thompson went two innings, fanning five.

In the second game, Cheyenne Earle cracked a three-run double to lead Petersburg to an 11-1 win.

Hedrick added two RBIs, including a run-producing double, Wisnewski a double and Bible a RBI double.

Thompson earned the win.

Petersburg will continue tournament action at 10:45 a.m. today against Hedgesville.

College baseball

Cedarville sweeps D&E

CEDARVILLE, Ohio -The Davis & Elkins baseball team dropped a G-MAC doubleheader to Cedarville on Friday.

The Yellow Jackets took game one, 5-2 and followed it up with a 6-3 win in the nightcap.

Brad Banzhoff had a two-run single in the second inning of the opener for the Senators, before Cedarville answered with three runs in the fifth and two more in the eighth.

D&E got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but a fly out ended the rally attempt.

Zach Bradfield (0-3) hurled 7 2/3 innings, yielding five runs on six hits with six strikeouts and walked three. Jake Smith gave up one hit in 1/3 of an inning.

In game two, Matt Moceri put D&E in front 1-0 with a solo home run.

But a bases-loaded triple led to five runs in the bottom of the inning, making the score 5-1 in favor of CU.

A D&E error made the score 6-1 in the fourth.

Ryan Butts notched a RBI single in the fifth, trimming the deficit to 6-2, and Houston Darling added a RBI groundout in the sixth to conclude the scoring.

Tyler Honeycutt (4-2) tossed the complete game, surrendering six runs – three earned – on seven hits while striking out four and walking a pair.

The teams will play another doubleheader at noon today.
