11 features highlight racing schedule
KERENS – Mother Nature was kind enough to leave the water spigot off Friday night as the 3/8th-mile Elkins Raceway oval held 11 features. The makeup features from May 9 were the first order of business.
In the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models, Billy Holbert jumped to the point at the outset and never looked back. The Ace Metal Works/Mountain Tech Heating and Cooling No. 7 collected his first checkerboard of the season. Shane Hitt would cross in second, and Cody Hardesty, Gary Dalton and Tim Senic rounded out the top five.
On the third try at green, the Budweiser FASTRAK Late Models saw Corey Metheny grab the early lead. On lap seven, Metheny slowed exiting turn four bringing out the yellow. That handed the spot to Tracie Sampson. The “Root” would not relinquish that lead.
The Lauttamus Communications/Dennison Plumbing No. 12 bested Kris Southern, Garrett Paugh, Billy Brown and Cody Rogers.
Vic Vandergrift, driving the Tri City Electrical/Vandergrift Auto No. V16, took command of the Fast ‘N Friendly Pharmacy Modified makeup and quickly fended off Dave Defibaugh for the victory. Randy Bohan, Matthew Chenoweth and Brent Trimble were third through fifth.
In the Miller’s Used Cars Street Stocks, Scott Bittinger took the checkered flag for his second win, but post-race inspection found an illegal suspension. That, in turn, handed the win to Anthony Arbogast, piloting the Miller’s Used Cars/C & JJ’s Used Cars No. 8A. He finished ahead of Ricky Vest, Teresa Vaughn, Rick Knicley and John Tallman Jr.
The “Flyin’ Car Salesman,” Ron Parrish, drove away and hid in the High Lines Oversize Load Escorting Mod Lites for the win. Parrish, driving the RPM Motors/Bevilock Racing No. 21R, crossed before Logan Hitt and Gabe Philips.
In regularly scheduled action, it was Miller’s Used Cars Street Stock night with a $500 check awaiting the winner.
Brian Mitchell and Bittinger – after making adjustments to pass tech inspection – scored the prelims. Bittinger snared the front spot with Mitchell, John Tallman Jr., Teresa Vaughn and R.D. Isner in tow. Tallman moved to second on the restart of lap one, while Anthony Arbogast came into the Top 5 on lap three. Sparse yellows slowed racing, but not Bittinger. For the second time in the evening, the Conners Trucking & Repair/Jack’s Recycling No. 29 sat in victory lane. This time, it was legal. Mitchell, Arbogast, Rick Knicley and Ryan Watson would complete the Top 5.
Gary Dalton and Cody Hardesty started on the front row of the Jenkins Ford Super Late Model finale. Dalton outdragged Hardesty in turn one and held the hot young driver at bay for the early going.
On lap eight, Hardesty pulled even with Dalton as the two battled door-to-door. On lap 10, Hardesty gained the advantage and secured the spot. As the circuits clicked off, the No. 1 Touchdown City/Pleasant Valley Tarp No. 53 of Hardesty added his second checkerboard to the wall this season. Dalton gave chase, but was passed by Senic late, giving Senic second and Dalton third. Shane Hitt and Billy Holbert were fourth and fifth.
It took four tries to count a lap in the Budweiser FASTRAK Late Model feature.
Greg Hicks was the early leader with Chad Green, Kris Southern, Cody Rogers and Garrett Paugh quickly following. Green began to apply pressure to Hicks. He dove under Hicks on lap three and took the spot away. Southern then slipped by Hicks. Green continued to show the way as Southern reeled him in. Southern looked under Green on lap 17, and made his move on lap 18. The W.V. Fan Zone/Stutler Motorsports No. K2 then held off Green for his first win of the year. Green had to settle for second. Hicks crossed in third and Paugh and Rogers rounded out the Top 5.
The emotional part of the evening came in the Fast ‘N Friendly Pharmacy Modifieds.
Just as hot laps were to begin, Brent Trimble found out his biggest fan, his grandmother, had passed. When word trickled over to the hillside, track officials gave the nod to let Trimble carry the American flag during “The Star Spangled Banner” in honor of Grandma Trimble.
In the Modified feature, Defibaugh was the front runner when the green flag fell. With multiple yellows halting action, Defibaugh still was in command with a determined Trimble on his tail. Trimble began to turn up the heat and motored to the quarter-panel of Defibaugh on lap 11. On the next go-round Trimble was able to clear Defibaugh and then drive on for the win. Vic Vandergrift, Matthew Chenoweth and Ronnie Tincher were third through fifth. Vandergrift was the Leggett Refrigeration Hard Charger.
Only two – of the three – High Lines Oversize Load Escorting Mod Lites were able to make the call. Ron Parrish, driving the Randy Kerns owned/RPM Motors No. 21R, made it a daily double. Gabe Philips was second and Hitt was unable to start.
As always, the Darren’s Pizza Shack Mini Wedges put on a great show. Paige Bragg was able to fend off a late charge from Jordan Gum for the checkers. Garrett Jones was third, Ryan Gum was fourth and Olivia Ferguson was fifth.
