Beckwith inks letter
ELKINS – Elkins High senior Michael Beckwith has officially signed a letter-of-intent to compete in track and field at the next level. Beckwith, who competed in both football and track at Elkins, will continue his athletic career at West Virginia Wesleyan College this fall.
Beckwith recently made the trip to Charleston for the Tigers, competing in the shot put at the 100th West Virginia State Track Meet. He qualified for the meet with a personal-record toss of 44-feet 3.5-inches to take second in the Region II Championship Meet. Beckwith went on to finish 13th overall in the Class AAA boys division at the State Tournament.
“What Michael has done over his career is quite remarkable. When he first came in as a freshmen, he was throwing in the low 30s, and four years later, he’s launching them consistently over 40 feet,” said Elkins High School head track coach Matt Lewis. “I couldn’t be more proud as a coach of his accomplishments. He’s a leader both on the field and in the classroom, and I know he’ll do quite well as a bobcat next season. Coach Skiles runs an excellent program at Wesleyan and I think Michael will fit in quite well. He’s still got some bigger throws ahead of him. Although he will be greatly missed, I wish him the best of luck over the next four years.”
Michael is the son of Margaret Beckwith.
