Big 10 track and field meet to be held today

KINGWOOD – The Big 10 Conference track and field championships will be contested today at Preston High School.

In the girls meet, Bridgeport is among the favorites, along with Buckhannon-Upshur, North Marion and Fairmont Senior.

Elkins coach Scott Biola is hoping his squad can improve on last year’s 10th-place effort.

“I think our girls are set for some dramatic improvements at the meet,” Biola said. “We’ve been working on fine tuning and polishing up a few things in the more technical events.”

The Tigers are hoping for good performances from their relay squads, including the 4×400, which placed fourth at last week’s Gazette Relays. Alexis Brandon, Skylee Watson, Skout Barger and Olivia Underwood comprise the unit.

“If we pass the baton like we’re capable of, we should be competitive in the sprint relays,” Biola said. “All of our relay teams have gotten better lately, and I’m excited to see what they can do (today).”

Individuals to watch for Elkins include Jontasia Sitton in the shot put, Barger and Paige Harrison in the hurdles, Underwood and Kathlyne Simmons in the sprint events and long jump and Watson in the 800 and pole vault.

The EHS boys will look to a strong group of distance runners to lead the charge.

Matt Wallace, Austin and Dalton Hamrick and Remington Knight are contenders in the distance events. Daniel Crawford (long jump) and Michael Beckwith (shot put, discus) also should make some noise in their respective events.

Wallace, Knight, Austin?Hamrick and Chris Bodkin are ranked among the top five in the state – time wise – in the 4×800.

“I’m really excited to finally have some decent meet weather,” EHS boys coach Matt Lewis said. “I think we’ve pretty much fine tuned everything we can and now we just have to show up and seen how we perform.

“After last weekend (at the Gazette Relays), I think we built a great deal of confidence, so we need to ride that through regionals.”

Regional competition will be held at 11 a.m. next Friday at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.
