Colts cruise by Grafton to stay alive
GRAFTON – Sean Curtis drove in three runs as Philip Barbour stayed alive in the Class AA, Region II, Section 3 tournament with a 16-8 win over Grafton on Wednesday.
The Colts (9-15) will host Liberty at 6 p.m. today, needing to defeat the Mountaineers twice to earn the sectional crown. A deciding game will be held on Friday if needed.
Philip Barbour broke open a 2-2 deadlock erupting for four runs in the second and five in each of the fifth and seventh innings.
The Bearcats finished the scoring with six runs in the seventh on the strength of a bases-clearing triple by Chuck McCloy.
Tyler Baldwin went six innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on eight hits.
He fanned one and walked one.
Josh Musgrove was tagged with the loss, allowing eight runs on six hits in four innings.
Saige Cline and Dylan Harris each had three hits for the Colts.
Jacob Marsh added a pair of RBIs.
Lewis takes sectional
TENNERTON – After rallying to take the opening contest, Lewis County captured the Class AAA, Region II, Section 4 title by defeating Buckhannon-Upshur, 3-1, in the clinching game on Wednesday night.
The Minuteman trailed 2-1 in the first game, which was delayed by rain on Tuesday, by a count of 3-2.
Lewis County took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the deciding game on a fielder’s choice RBI and a sacrifice fly by Joe Nichols.
The Minutemen tacked on their third run in the sixth in Dylan Gump’s ground-rule RBI double.
Lewis County will entertain Hampshire May 27 in regional semifinal action.
