Colts drop game vs. Liberty
PHILIPPI – The Philip Barbour Colts let a two run lead slip through their fingers late in the game Monday as Liberty took a 3-2 victory in the first round of sectional playoffs.
“We just couldn’t get that timely hit,” PB coach Jonathan Carpenter said. “We had plenty of chances to open the game up but we couldn’t get a big hit. We fielded extremely well. We just got to put it together and get back out there Wednesday and see what happens.”
The Colts were up 2-0 going into the top of the sixth inning, when things began to come undone. Starting pitcher Sage Cline walked three consecutive batters and Carpenter replaced him with Shawn Curtis. Liberty’s Bryan VanNorman then connected for a single to make the scored 2-1, before PB could close out the stanza.
In the top of the 7th inning, Michael Drummond and Jaylen Bartley drove in runs for the Mountaineers to put Liberty up 3-2. In the bottom half of the inning, the Colts sent three batters to the plate without any luck.
Ty Wickline pitched seven innings to pick up the victory. He gave up two runs on six hits, while striking out five batters.
Drummond and Bartley both went 2 for 3 with an RBI. VanNorman finished the game 1 for 2 with an RBI.
Curtis took the loss for the Colts. He pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. At the plate, he went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
Chris Neville paced the PB offense, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Bai Carpenter went 1 for 4 with a run scored.
The Colts (8-15) return to action Wednesday to face the winner of Liberty and Grafton. Game time and location is yet to be
East Hardy defeats Paw Paw in Class A
BAKER – Logan Strawderman struck out four batters Monday to help power East Hardy past Paw Paw, 6-0, in the first round of the Class A, Region II, Section 4 tournament.
“We started off slow, but we held them off with good pitching,” Cougars coach Chad Williams said. “Our bats finally came alive late in the game. Now we move on to a big one with Moorefield.”
Dylan Strawderman and Corey McDonald got the offense jump-started by scoring runs in the 3rd inning. The Cougars went on to score four more runs in the 6th inning to claim the victory.
Logan Strawderman pitched six innings to pick up the win. He gave up two hits and zero runs.
Dylan Strawderman finished the game 2 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. McDonald went 1 for 4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Hunter Miller also had a good game, going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
River Weese took the loss for Paw Paw. He pitched seven innings, giving up six runs on eight hits. He struck out nine batters.
Michael Crabtree and Josh Newlon picked up the hits for Paw Paw.
East Hardy (13-13) travels to Moorefield today for a 7 p.m. contest.
