Colts win; will play in title tilt
PHILIPPI – Sage Cline whiffed eight batters Monday to help Philip Barbour blank Liberty, 5-0, in the Class AA, Region II Section 3 tournament. The teams face off again today in Philippi at 6 p.m. for the championship.
“Sage threw a heck of a game,” Colts coach Jonathan Carpenter said. “His curve was working well and he stayed ahead in the count. The guys finally settled in about midway through, and we started getting the clutch hits we needed.”
With the score tied, 0-0, the Colts exploded for four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. In that stanza, Jake Marsh, Chris Neville, Clay Stewart and Cline scored runs.
Cline threw all seven innings, giving up seven hits. At the plate, he went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Jacob Marsh led the Colt offense, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Al Johnson went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Chris Neville and Bai Carpenter also drove in runs for PB.
Jonathan Kreyenbuhl took the loss for Liberty. He pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, while striking out four batters.
Bryan VanNorman paced the Mountaineer offense, going 2-for-2. Kreyenbuhl, Michael Drummond and Jaylen Bartley picked up the remainder of the hits.
