Cougars knock off Jackets in sectional play; Vikes win

MOOREFIELD – Hunter Miller cracked a two-run double in the fifth inning Tuesday to push East Hardy past Moorefield, 3-2, in Class A, Region II, Section 4 tournament play,

“It was one heck of a ball game,” Cougars coach Chad Williams said. “It was a great win for us. The boys have worked hard all year. We’ve still got to win one more for the sectional title.”

Senior David Shifflett pitched the complete game to notch the victory. Along with striking out 13 batters, he gave up two runs, both unearned, on two hits.

Bryce Strawderman led East Hardy in hitting, going 3 for 4 with a run scored. Corey McDonald also had a good game, going 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Austin Williams gave up eight hits in six innings to pick up the loss. He gave up three runs and stuck out seven batters.

Dakota Vetter and Tyler Smith picked up the two hits for the Yellow Jackets.

East Hardy (13-13) will host the winner of today’s Moorefield/Paw Paw contest at 7 p.m. Friday.

Berkeley Springs 3

PETERSBURG – Brandon George struck out nine batters Tuesday to help Petersburg cruise past Berkeley Springs in Game 1 of the Class AA, Region II, Section 2 tournament.

“We’re playing some of our best baseball right now,” Vikings coach Bobby Jack Harman said. “I just hope it continues. We’re pitching good, our defense is good and we’re hitting consistently. Berkeley Springs is a good team and they play tough. We’ve still got to win one more against them.”

George gave up two hits in seven innings to pick up the victory.

Preston Hovermale took the loss for Indians. He gave up six runs on four hits and fanned three.

Brian George paced the Vikings’ offense, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs. Ryan Colaw added a hit and two RBIs, while Trent Borror also drove in one run.

The teams will meet at 6:30 p.m. today at Berkeley Springs in Game 2.
