EHS boys place sixth at Big 10 meet; Watson sets mark

KINGWOOD – The Elkins boys placed sixth at the Big 10 Conference championships held Friday at Preston High School.

Bridgeport captured the title with 87 points, followed by Buckhannon-Upshur (84.5), Fairmont Senior (75), Lewis County (65), Preston (55), Elkins (51), Robert C. Byrd (40), Grafton (38), East Fairmont (32.5), Lincoln (20), North Marion (8), Liberty (1) and Philip Barbour (1).

Elkins had two conference champions – Daniel Crawford with a leap of 19-11 in the long jump and the 4×800 relay team (Matt Wallace, Remington Knight, Austin Hamrick and Chris Bodkin).

Wallace also placed second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:40.16 and in the 800 (2:04.46).

Austin Hamrick, meanwhile, was third in the 3,200 and Michael Beckwith fourth in the shot put and discus.

“I was really pleased with our performances,” EHS boys coach Matt Lewis said. “We didn’t necessarily get the times I wanted, but the places were great.

“The boys side of the big 10 is highly competitive and it’s great to be in the top half of the conference. The 4×800 and Daniel’s performance in the long jump were amazing. To have five guys on the first team is huge. They certainly deserve it.”

The EHS girls, meanwhile, turned in a fifth-place showing with 47 points.

“I was very happy with our performance,” EHS girls coach Scott Biola said. “We were 10th last year in the Big 10 meet and to jump up five spots this year is a huge improvement.”

Skylee Watson broke her school record set earlier this spring in the pole vault with an effort of 7-0 for the Tigers, while Olivia Underwood was second in the long jump, the 4×400 relay team was second, Kathlyne Simmons was fourth in the long jump and Jontasia Sitton third in the shot put.

Elkins will return to action Friday at Buckhannon-Upshur High School for the Class AAA,?Region II?meet.

The state meet will be held May 23-24 at Charleston’s Laidley Field.
