EHS tennis teams win titles
CLARKSBURG – The Elkins High School tennis teams captured Big 10 Conference titles Saturday at Robert C. Byrd High School.
The EHS boys finished with 19 points to hold off Buckhannon-Upshur and Lincoln, who both tallied 15 points.
Bridgeport and Lewis County followed with 11 points each, while Grafton (7), Robert C. Byrd (7), East Fairmont (6), Fairmont Senior (5), Liberty (3), Philip Barbour (1) and North Marion (0) rounded out the field.
The Tigers did most of their damage on Friday, as Mason Schoonover took the title in No. 3 singles and Linkoln Barger in No. 4 singles. Schoonover downed Bridgeport’s Brady Hillegas, 8-3, for the title, while Barger defeated Lewis County’s Riley Gunter, 8-5.
B-U’s Ethan Hull defeated Fairmont Senior’s Blake Hoke in the No. 2 singles title match, 8-2.
Elkins’ Taylor Stump lost to Lincoln’s Alec Moran in the No. 1 singles championship.
In Saturday’s doubles play, the Tigers’ Stump and Ryan Henson lost to Moran and Herbie Vance in the No. 1 title match, while Schoonover and Barger fell to B-U’s Sebastian Reger and David Maxwell at No. 2.
The EHS girls won multiple titles to rack up 23 points, followed by Bridgeport (17), Lewis County (9), Fairmont Senior (8), Philip Barbour (7), RCB (6), Grafton (5), Lincoln (4), North Marion (4), B-U (2) and Liberty (2).
Earning titles on Friday for the Tigers were Christine Zurbuch, who defeated RCB’s Allie Yoho, 8-4, in No. 1 singles, Bradley Gutta, who defeated Lincoln’s Jenna Correll, 8-2, in No. 3 singles and Kayla Gainer, who got past Bridgeport’s Anna Wilfong, 8-5, in No. 4 singles.
Zurbuch and Gainer then teamed up on Saturday to take the No. 1 doubles title over Lewis County’s Morgan Weaver and Madison Jenkins, 8-6. Twin sisters Bradley and Caitlin Gutta also took the No. 2 doubles trophy by defeating Bridgeport’s Wilfong and Taylor Abraham, 8-3.
Elkins’ Brandon Simmons was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
The Tigers and Bucs will begin regional play Thursday at Jefferson High School.
