Elkins pair fall at state tourney

CHARLESTON – Elkins High School’s Ryan Henson and Mason Schoonover lost matches Thursday during the first day of the high school state tennis tournament.

Henson lost to Cabell Midland’s John Mears, 8-4, in first-round action in No. 2 singles, while Schoonover fell to Huntington’s Joseph Touma, 8-5, in quarterfinal action in No. 3 singles.

In Class AA-A, Petersburg’s Kelsie Roby advanced to the semifinals in No. 1 singles. She defeated Parkersburg Catholic’s Audrey Eisenman, 8-3, in the first round and Madonna’s Ali Welch in the quarterfinals.

Her teammate, Kesley Self, defeated Charleston?Catholic’s Sarah Fox, 9-8 (8-6) in the first round in No. 2 singles before falling to Oak Glen’s Madison Juszcak, 8-3, in the quarterfinals.

Petersburg’s Ankur Makani defeated Fairmont Senior’s Blake Hoke, 8-2, in the quarterfinals in No. 2 singles.

In No. 3 singles, Petersburg’s Maxwell Roth lost to Charleston Catholic’s Tyler Zubick, 8-2, in quarterfinal action.

The state tournament will continue today at Charleston Catholic High School and the Kanawha City Community Center. The tourney concludes on Saturday.
