EMS softball team defeats Lumberport

LUMBERPORT – The Elkins Middle School softball team picked up a 13-3 win over Lumberport this week.

Lauren Wilmoth went three inning to earn the win, allowing three runs on three hits, striking out five and walking one.

Susan Riggleman and Grace Huffman each went 3 for 3 at the plate for the Hornets, while Wilmoth, Hali Newlon and Alexis Ice were 2 for 3.

Elkins will host Taylor County for a doubleheader on Friday.

Invitational held at EHS

ELKINS – The Buckhannon-Upshur girls and Robert L. Bland boys captured titles at the Tygarts Valley/Elkins Middle School Invitational held at Elkins High School.

The B-U girls piled up 195 points, followed by Elkins (111), RLB (94), Webster Springs (24), Tygarts Valley (13) and Notre Dame (10).

First-place finishers included Audrey Gaudet, B-U, 100-meter dash and high jump; Madison Shepherd, B-U, 200 and 400; Emily Louk, RLB, 800, 1,600 and 3,200; Kaci Zopp, EMS, 75 hurdles, 200 hurdles and long jump; EMS 4×100 relay team (Kiley Calain, Taylor Maynard, Erin Dettinger and Sophia Triplett); EMS 4×200 relay (Zopp, Dettinger, Triplett and Calain); B-U 4×400 relay (Yami Cerna, Iris Kolenich, Gaudet and Shepherd); B-U 4×400 relay (Lauren Gompers, Abigail Vincent, Katie Orwig and Kolenich); B-U shuttle hurdle relay (Kaitlyn Smith, Hailey Farnsworth, Kaitlyn Luterek and Alissa Lawrence); Luterek, B-U, shot put; and Layla Sydqi, RLB, discus.

Louk and Zopp shared high-point honors with 30 points each.

Tygarts Valley had a third-place finish in the 4×100 relay team (Katlyn Defibaugh, Hannah Cogar, Brenna Yokum and Salena Martin).

RLB’s boys tallied 163 points. Webster Spring (129.75) was second, followed by EMS (93), B-U (91), Tygarts Valley (31) and Notre Dame (3.25).

Garnering first-place finishes were Adam Cutlip, RLB, 100, 400 and high jump; Dawson Tharp, Webster, 200; Hunter Mitchell, RLB, 800; Mason Clark, EMS, 1,600 and 3,200; Nathan Casto, Webster, 75 hurdles; Dorian Groggs, Webster, 200 hurdles; RLB 4×100 relay (Brycen Lipps, Aiden Post, Avery Post and Jacob White); B-U 4×200 relay (Kole Kessler, Cade Garrett, Drew Griffith and Joey Tomasula); RLB 4×400 relay (Mitchell, Aaron Beam, Aiden Post and Adam Cutlip); 4×800 relay (Avery Post, Shawn Moran, Hunter Blake and Chase Freeman); Webster shuttle hurdle relay (Nathan Casto, Logan Cochran, Seth Vandevener and Brennen Williams); Jacob White, RLB, long jump; and Dustin Williams, Webster, shot put and discus.

Cutlip tallied 30 points to earn high-point honors.

Elkins will travel to the Harry Green Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.
