Petersburg 8, Liberty 0

PETERSBURG – Freshman Callie Wisnewski smashed a grand slam Thursday to help Petersburg cruise past Liberty-Harrison, 8-0, in the Class AA, Region II championship game. The Vikings will now advance to the state tournament in Vienna next week.

“The girls played well,” PHS coach Dwayne Hedrick said. “We got a solid pitching performance from Marley (Thompson). She struck out nine batters in five innings, so we didn’t have to field a lot of balls.

“What really helped was that we laid down three really good bunts and it caused havoc for them.

“That loosened the game up and allowed some things to happen. I’m very proud of our girls. It was a good, solid win for us,”

The Vikings scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to the victory. In the frame, Cassidy Hedrick connected for a double to score Haley Swick. Then, four batters later, Wisnewski crushed the long ball to make the final 8-0.

Thompson pitched the complete game, striking out nine batters. She gave up one hit and one walk.

Lexie Carder pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits in taking the loss. Offensively, she picked up the only hit for Liberty.

Wisnewski finished the game 1 for 3 with a home run, four RBIs and one run scored. Cassidy Hedrick went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, while Swick finished the game 2 for 2 with a run scored.

Petersburg (23-5) will take on the winner of Herbert Hoover/Wayne at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
