Lady Bulldogs advance to Class A sectional title game
HUTTONSVILLE – Charity Lower struck out five batters Monday to push Tygarts Valley past Notre Dame, 12-9, in the Class A, Region II semifinal softball game. The Lady Bulldogs will now host Moorefield on Thursday for the regional championship.
“It was a nail-biter,” TVHS coach Hannah Sundberg said. “The sixth inning was the turning point of the game. The girls finally decided to kick butt and take names. They started being patient and taking walks. I kept telling them, ‘look for your pitch. I need you on base. Don’t be a hero.’ They found their momentum and got into a groove.”
The Lady Bulldogs took the lead early, going up 4-0 in the first inning. However, the Irish came back to score four runs in the third inning and tie the game.
Notre Dame went up 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning after Sierra Frosch, Katie Shaffer and Jordyn Rowh connected with doubles to power the offense.
Four consecutive walks in the fifth inning set the stage for the Lady Bulldogs comeback. Paige Pritt scored on a walk, while Danielle Johnson drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 6-6.
Tygarts Valley erupted for six more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 12-6 lead. Morgan Stout and Pritt hit triples to drive in runs, while Lacy Conrad and Johnson also notched RBIs.
Notre Dame tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn’t muster enough offense to retake the lead.
Lower tossed the complete game to pick up the victory. She gave up nine runs on 10 hits and walked seven batters. At the plate, she went 2-for-5 with a walk.
Junior Makayla Harris paced the Tygarts Valley offense, going 2-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Stout also had a good day at the plate, going 2-for- 5 with two triples and an RBI. Pritt added a triple and an RBI, while Tara Sharp went 2-for-4.
Sophomore Mikaela Diaz took the loss for the Irish. She pitched seven innings, giving up 12 runs on 12 hits, while striking out one and walking nine batters.
Frosch led the ND hitters, going 1-for-2 with a double, three walks and three runs scored. Shaffer went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.
Tygarts Valley (7-10) will host Moorefield (22-6) on Thursday. Game time is yet to be announced.
