Moorefield, PHS roll in softball sectionals

MOOREFIELD – Danica Rogers twirled a two-hitter as Moorefield blanked East Hardy 8-0 in the opening game of the Class A,?Region II, Section 4 tournament on Tuesday night.

Rogers struck out nine and walked two in going all six innings.

Kelsey Hines went 2 for 3 and knocked in a pair of runs for the Yellow Jackets, while Tara George was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Beth Cook drew three walks and had an RBI, Brooklin Gilbert was 2 for 4 and Sumer Flinn 1 for 1 with an RBI.

Jodie Funkhouser took the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

She had five strikeouts and issued five walks.

Autumn Mathias and Funkhouser had the lone hits for the Cougars.

The teams will play the second game of the best-of-three series at 7 p.m. today at East Hardy.

Berkeley Springs 4

PETERSBURG – Petersburg scored seven runs in the sixth inning Tuesday to overpower Berkeley Springs, 7-4, in game one of sectional action.

“It was a rough one,” PHS coach Dwayne Hedrick said. “I was really worried. They had us down and we just put together a good inning and pulled it off. I’m proud of my girls, they didn’t give up.”

Berkeley Springs jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the end of the third inning.

However, freshman Leah Hahn crushed a three-run homer in the sixth inning to jump start the rally. The next batter, pinch hitter Kamee Iman, nailed a solo shot to tie the game.

Cassidy Hedrick then kept the drive alive with a two run double, with two outs. Marley Thompson and Cheyenne Earle rapped consecutive RBI doubles to extend the lead to 6-4. Brittani Bible capped the scoring with a single to score Earle and make the score 7-4.

Bible paced the Viking offense, going 3 for 4 with a double and RBI. Hahn went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs.

Cassidy Hedrick pitched four innings in relief to earn the victory. She gave up one hit and struck out two batters.

Alura Rohm took the loss for the Indians. She pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits and striking out six batters.

The teams will play game two today at 6;30 p.m. at Berkeley Springs High School.

Pendleton wins

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Pendleton County claimed an 11-0 win over Eastern Mennonite (Va.) Tuesday in non conference action.

Senior Brittany Huffman pitched six innings to earn the victory for the Wildcats. She gave up two hits and struck out four batters. At the plate, she went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Freshman Cheyenne Pitsenbarger paced the offense, going 3 for 4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Brooke Arbogast also had a good game, going 2 for 3 with three runs scored, three stolen bases, an RBI and a walk.
