Postseason play to kick into full gear

Postseason action for high school spring sports will kick into high gear this week.

Baseball sectional action begins today, while softball regional semifinal action is on tap for Thursday.

Area track and field fans are also in for a treat, as three regional meets are set for local venues.

Baseball sectional matchups for area teams include Elkins vs. Hampshire, Lewis County vs. Buckhannon-Upshur, Pocahontas County vs. Pendleton County and Petersburg vs. Berkeley Springs in best-of-three series that will start Tuesday for most.

Philip Barbour, meanwhile, is slated to host Liberty today in the opening round of their sectional, which also includes Grafton.

Tygarts Valley, Tucker County and Union are matched up in sectional play, while Moorefield, East Hardy and Paw Paw form the Class A,?Region II, Section 4 tourney.

Regional semifinal play is set to begin on May 26.

Regional semifinal softball contests set for Thursday include Elkins at Buckhannon-Upshur (B-UMS field), Notre Dame at Tygarts Valley, Pendleton County at Moorefield and Keyser at Petersburg. The finals will begin on May 22.

The Class A,?Region II track meet will be held at Elkins High School on Wednesday.

Teams competing include Tygarts Valley,?Tucker County, Pocahontas County, East Hardy, Moorefield, Notre Dame, Pendleton County, South Harrison and Union.

In the Class AA, Region II meet Thursday at Lewis County High School, Philip Barbour, Petersburg, Berkeley Springs, Frankfort, Grafton, Keyser, Liberty, Lincoln, Robert C. Byrd and Bridgeport will do battle.

Friday’s Class AAA, Region II meet will be held at Buckhannon-Upshur. B-U, Elkins, Lewis County, Hampshire, Hedgesville, Jefferson, Martinsburg, Musselman, Spring Mills and Washington make up the field.

The state meet will take place May 22-23 at Charleston’s Laidley Field.
