Rain washes out softball, baseball postseason action
ELKINS – Thursday’s rain showers postponed high school softball and baseball postseason action.
Regional semifinal softball contests delayed were Elkins at Buckhannon-Upshur and Notre Dame at Tygarts Valley.
Both of those games are rescheduled for today, along with Pendleton County at Moorefield.
Sectional baseball action on tap for today include Union at Tucker County, Petersburg at Berkeley Springs and Paw Paw at Moorefield.
Philip Barbour’s home contest against Liberty is now tentatively slated for Monday.
Tygarts Valley and Notre Dame will clash at 4:30 p.m. in the Class A, Region II semifinal game at Huttonsville.
Senior Charity Lower will take the mound for the Bulldogs. She notched six wins on the season.
“She’s had a really good year,” TVHS coach Hannah Sundberg said. “I hated losing her as a shortstop, but she pitches so well. She’s really stepped up to the plate. She’s a competitor. Even when she makes a mistake, she bounces right back. She plays a very strong defense and she’s one of my top offensive players.”
According to Sundberg, other key offensive contributors include seniors Danielle Johnson and Paige Pritt, along with junior MaKayla Harris and sophomore Lacey Conrad.
“We’ve really had the bats moving,” Sundberg said. “I tell the girls to be patient. Nobody has to be a hero, just get a hit. I want them to play smart and understand that a good team player does what is needed, whether it’s get a hit or take the walk.”
The winner of today’s game will either Moorefield or Pendleton County next week in the regional title game.
Elkins and B-U, meanwhile, split during the regular season, each winning at home.
The winner of their Class AAA,?Region II semifinal will visit either Musselman or Hedgesville in the finals.
