ROMNEY – The Elkins High School baseball team split a pair of games on Saturday against Hampshire and Petersburg.
The Tigers (10-8) knocked off sectional foe Hampshire 9-6 in Saturday’s first game by plating four runs in the seventh inning to erase a 6-5 deficit.
Colby Gainer led Elkins, which lost to the Trojans 4-3 in 10 innings on Friday, at the plate by going 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Tyler Shreve was 2 for 3 with a triple, Logan Phillips 2 for 3 with a run-producing triple and Kollin Hopwood 1 for 4 with an RBI double.
Isaac Riggleman went the distance to earn the win, allowing six runs, four being earned, striking out eight and walking just one.
Hampshire ace Shane Ennis went the first six innings, allowing five runs, fanning seven and walking three. Tyler Ault took the loss in one inning of action, surrendering four runs.
The Tigers dropped a 4-0 decision later in the day at Petersburg. Caleb Riggleman took the loss, giving up four runs, one being earned, in five innings. He struck out nine and walked nine. David Gainer finished in relief.
Brandon George earned the win for the Vikings in a complete-game effort, giving up just three hits, fanning six and walking two.
“It was hard to keep up the intensity after a big win over Hampshire earlier in the day,” Elkins coach Adam Roth said. “But we gained some momentum by defeating Hampshire with sectional tournament play starting next week.”
The Tigers will return to Big 10 Conference action at 7 p.m. today at Grafton.
The Vikings (11-7) will visit East Hardy at 7 p.m. today.
