Trojans sweep Tigers to take section

ROMNEY – Hampshire captured the Class AAA, Region II, Section 3 tournament by sweeping Elkins on Wednesday.

The Tigers were coming off a 5-4 win on Tuesday in the first game of the best-of-three series, but the Trojans were able to take the section with a 16-6 victory in five innings and a 4-3 victory in the deciding game.

“This was a battle of two evenly-matched teams,” Elkins coach Adam Roth said. “We had our opportunities in the second game but they were able to push one across in the final inning.

“Our kids fought hard but just came up short.”

The second game was tied 3-3 before Hampshire crossed the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on Ethan Turner’s RBI fielder’s choice.

The Tigers trailed 3-0 before tying the game in the fifth when Tyler Shreve singled and later scored on Cole Harlan’s sacrifice fly. Harlan also had an RBI fielder’s choice in the fourth, while Isaac Riggleman tallied an RBI

Colby Gainer took the loss in his final high school game, allowing four runs – two being earned – on eight hits. He struck out seven and walked three.

Gainer also led Elkins at the plate, going 3 for 4.

David Delawder was the winning pitcher in both games.

Caleb Riggleman took the loss in the opening game, allowing eight runs, only three being earned, in three innings.

He fanned one.

Logan Phillips was 2 for 3 with a double and homer at the plate, while Gainer was 2 for 2 with an RBI.

The Tigers finish the season 14-11.

“We lose a great group of seniors,” Roth said. “They showed great leadership and hopefully our underclassmen have learned from them.”

The Trojans will visit Lewis County in regional semifinal action on May 27. The Minutemen swept the Bucs by the scores of 3-2 and 3-1 Wednesday to advance.
