Tucker, TV split in sectional play

HUTTONSVILLE – Tucker County and Tygarts Valley split a doubleheader Wednesday in Class A, Region II, Section 2 action.

The teams will face off at 4:30 p.m. today at Huttonsville for the sectional championship.

In the opener, Charity Lower gave up one hit to help the Bulldogs blank the Mountain Lions, 6-0. She pitched the complete game, striking out six batters. At the plate, she went 3 for 4 with two doubles.

Senior Danielle Johnson got the Bulldog offense cracking, going 2 for 3 with a double and a triple and an RBI. Tara Sharp, Abby Lambert and Lacey Conrad also drove in runs.

Bekah Simmons took the loss, giving up 10 hits and striking out three batters.

Simmons bounced back in the nightcap, striking out six batters to help the Mountain Lions win, 2-1.

Tucker County took a 1-0 advantage in the fourth inning when Caroline Adams drove in Mariah Bowley. The Mountain Lions extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a single by Trista Collar to score Bowley.

The Bulldogs grabbed their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Lower stole home. However, the Mountain Lions defense held on to the 2-1 advantage to secure the victory.

“We came out strong in game one,” Tygarts Valley coach Hannah Sundberg said. “In the second game, we made a few mistakes, especially with base running. We had a couple of hits and then we fell into a slump and quit hitting.”

Moorefield 13

East Hardy 4

MOOREFIELD – Moorefield secured the Class A, Region II, Section 4 title with a 13-4 win over East Hardy on Wednesday night.

Leading the Yellow Jackets the plate was Brooklin Gilbert, who was 2 for 3 with a triple and homer. Beth Cook was 2 for 2, Tara George 2 for 3, Brooke Riggleman 1 for 2 with a double, Beth Smith 1 for 2 and Ashley Rexrode 1 for 2 with a triple.

Riggleman earned the win, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings. She struck out three.

Jodie Funkhouser took the loss in 1 1/3 innings. Autumn Mathias finished in relief.

Marilyn Cassell was 2 for 3 for the Coguars, while Rayann Foltz, Ruby Fridley and Cheyenne Herbrandt added hits.

Moorefield will host a regional semifinal game next Thursday.
