D&E soccer team to face tough slate

ELKINS – Davis &?Elkins men’s soccer coach Aron Bassoff knows a tough regular-season schedule can pay dividends once postseason play begins.

With that in mind, the defending G-MAC regular-season champion Senators will face a tough slate once the fall season rolls around.

“I am excited about our schedule for the 2014 season,” Bassoff said. “It presents challenges right off the bat with four very strong games in a row – three teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament and one that just narrowly missed out.

“We know that this is the schedule we have to play in order to make the NCAA tournament.”

D&E will open the season Sept. 4 at home against Tiffin, which compiled a record of 11-3-4 last year and made the NCAA Midwest Regional.

The Senators will then face a road game at Quincy (Ill.), followed by home tilts against defending MEC champion Notre Dame (Ohio) and Millersville, both NCAA tournament teams in 2013.

“This spring we worked hard on getting ourselves fit and play very well in a short periods of time to simulate what we will be facing this fall,” Bassoff said. “Because of this, the boys know what is ahead and are ready to tackle this challenge.”

D&E will open conference play Sept. 18 at home against Ohio Valley.

Other games of note include a pair of matches against rival Alderson Broaddus, a rematch of the G-MAC tournament championship against Cedarville Oct. 8 at home and non-league tilts against California (Pa.), WVU-Tech and Gannon.

The G-MAC conference tournament gets underway on Nov. 1.
