Elkins Post 29 wins opener, 5-1

ELKINS – Colby Gainer twirled a two-hitter as Elkins Post 29 opened Pizza Hut Hillbilly Hardball play with a 5-1 win over Severna Park (Md.) Thursday night at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Gainer (2-1) struck out 10 and walked five.

Post 29 took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Gainer singled in Tyler Shreve. Gainer then scored on a balk call.

Elkins tacked on three more runs in the sixth as Al Johnson tripled, Shreve walked and Gainer reached on a single to load the bases.

Doug Smith then plated in Johnson with a single, Chance Price followed with an RBI fielder’s choice and Gainer trotted home on an error.

“It was good to come out and win our first game,” Post 29 manager Chris George said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve won the first game in the Hardball Classic, and hopefully it will give us some momentum for the rest of the tourney.”

Matt Ferrera took the loss for Post 175 in six innings of work, allowing five runs on six hits, fanning 14 and walking two.

Morgantown …… 7

Jefferson County 1

Tyler Shorter went 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs to power Morgantown Post 2 past Jefferson County at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

“It was our first game playing as a team,” Jefferson County coach Tim Carroll said. “We got a late start on our season because some of our kids played in the state tournament. We also missed a lot of practice because of the weather. I’m not taking anything away from Morgantown. They played really well. They hit the ball and they pitched well. They deserved to win the game.”

J.T. Steigmeyer threw a complete game for Post 2 to pick up the victory. He gave up four hits in the effort.

Mark McKee took the loss for Jefferson County. He gave up six hits in five innings and struck out three batters.

The Wildcats scored their run in the seventh inning when Trevor Pansch scored on a balk. Pansch went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Jefferson County 4

Seminole (Fla.) … 1

Andy Disque struck out six batters to lift Jefferson County past Seminole (Fla.) at Elkins High School/Post 29 Field.

“Our defense was really styling,” Carroll said. “We got a stellar performance from Andy (Disque). He was always ahead in the count. When they did put the ball in play, the guys responded. He battled through a few tough spots, and the defense stepped up and took care of business.”

The Wildcats capitalized on three consecutive bunts in the second inning to set up their four runs. Mckee, Ryan French, Ty Carroll and Pansch scored the runs for Jefferson County. Charlie Barnholt collected the only RBI.

Seminole scored its only run of the contest in the first inning when Cody Miller trotted home on a single by Doug Burgh.

Disque pitched a complete to earn the victory. He gave up two hits and one earned run.

Tanner Suarez took the loss for the Florida squad, which is managed by former Greenbrier East and Major League pitcher Seth McClung. He pitched five innings, giving up four runs on five hits.

Mifflin County (Pa.) 11

Seminole (Fla.) ………. 8

Mifflin County used a seven-run first inning to defeat Seminole (Fla.) at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Issac Maclay had a grand slam to lead Post 287, while Isaac Stonehecker and Heath Hidlay had two RBIs each.

Shane Connahan and Stonehecker each homered.

Miller, Quentin Pertkiewicz and Zach Patchonka had two hits apiece for Seminole.

Wheeling 11, Clarksburg 1

Eric Crow had a pair of RBIs to power Wheeling past Clarksburg at Bridgeport High School.
