Opening Victory

ELKINS – Chance Price drove in three runs Monday to help Elkins Post 29 defeat Preston County Post 56, 12-2, in the season opener at Elkins High School.

“It was a good opening game,” Post 29 coach Chris George said. “I’m very proud of our at bats. I’m also proud of the work on the bases. We had a few steals tonight. Isaac (Riggleman) pitched well and Chance (Price) gave us some run support at the plate.”

Riggleman hurled seven innings to pick up the victory. He gave up two runs on four hits, while striking out four batters.

Price paced the Elkins’ offense, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a double and three RBIs. P.J. Lanham also had a good game, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Doug Smith added two hits and two RBIs to the effort.

“I think the key tonight was patience at the plate,” George said. “We forced them to throw a lot of pitches and go to their bullpen early. We just kinda wore them down.”

Noah Torralba notched the loss, pitching 3 1/3 innings. He gave up five runs on five hits, while walking six and striking out four batters.

Post 29 scored three runs in the second inning and never looked back. In that stanza, Price, Tyler Shreve and Lanham crossed the plate.

Post 56 tried to rally in the 4th inning, but could only push two runs across the plate. Logan Menear connected on a single to score Kyle Cool and Jeremy Pyles hit a double to score Kaleb Atkinson.

Elkins Post 29 returns to action today at 5:30 p.m. when the team travels to Garrett, Md., to face Post 214.

The game will be played at Garrett Community College in McHenry, Md.
