State tourney to get underway today

CHARLESTON?- The high school state baseball tournament will get underway today at Appalachian Power Park.

Class A semifinal action is on tap for today, as Notre Dame faces Gilmer County at 4:30 p.m. and St. Marys battles Man in the nightcap.

The finals are set for 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Irish (26-6) defeated Pendleton County in the regional finals to advance. Senior Chris Petrucci powers the Notre Dame offense with a .467 average. Josh Baker has a .372 average with 15 RBIs and Kolby Abruzzino has knocked in a team-best 26 runs with a .310 average.

The Irish pitching staff is anchored by Jordan Miller (6-1) and T.J. McKinsey.

Miller, who also has a .379 average at the plate, is 7-1 on the season, while McKinsey is 4-4 with 47 strikeouts.

The Titans (25-10) will counter with senior Nathan Allison, who is batting .478 with 40 RBIs.

Seniors Adam Beall (8-4) and Austin Cunningham (6-1) headline the pitching staff.

Today’s second game marks the first state tournament trip since 1990 for St. Marys, which carries a 29-2 mark into Charleston.

Robbie Harper (9-2, 1.16 ERA), Tyler Davis (6-0) and Michael Stout (6-0) give the Blue Devils three quality arms on the mound.

Jarrod Lough has a .485 average at the dish, followed by John Riggs (.461).

Pitchers Braden Griffin and Jake Adkins anchor the Man pitching staff.

Griffin is also on of the team’s top hitters.

Friday’s Class AA semifinal action features a pair of Big 10 Conference teams. Bridgeport will face Chapmanville a 5 p.m. and Fairmont Senior battles Independence at 7:45 p.m.

The Class AA championship game will be contested at 4 p.m. Saturday.

In Class AAA, semifinal contests set for Friday include Washington vs. Hurricane at 10 a.m. and Riverside vs. Wheeling Park at 12:45 p.m.

The title game will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday.
