10-11-year-old tournament to begin today

HUTTONSVILLE – Ten teams from around the state will converge today for the start of the 10-11-year-old state tournament being hosted by Tygart Valley Little League and District 8.

The event began on Friday with a picnic for the teams at the site of the tournament – the Tygart Valley Little League Field in Huttonsville.

Each of the 10 representatives are broken down in one of three pools – A includes District 8 champion Summersville, District 5 champion Bridgeport, District 6 champion Bi State and District 3 runner-up Mountaineer.

Teams competing in B are District 1 champ Mason County, District 1 runner-up Vinson and District 3 champion St. Albans.

District 6 runner-up Jefferson, District 2 champion Man and District 5 runner-up Fairmont are the teams battling in Pool C.

Opening ceremonies are scheduled to begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. today.

Tygart Valley Little League plans to honor Jennifer “Jenni” Currence, who recently passed away and served as volunteer with the league and other athletics in the area.

Games on tap for today include Bi-State vs. Mountaineer at noon, Jefferson vs. Man at 2:30 p.m., Mason County vs. Vinson at 5 p.m. and Summersville vs. Bridgeport at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday’s action will get underway with Man vs. Fairmont at 1 p.m., Vinson vs. St. Albans at 3:30 p.m., Bridgeport vs. Bi State at 6 p.m. and Summersville vs. Mountaineer at 8:30 p.m.

Pool play concludes on Monday, with Mountaineer vs. Bridgeport at 1 p.m., Summersville vs. Bi State at 3:30 p.m., Mason County vs. St, Albans at 6 p.m. and Jefferson vs. Fairmont at 8:30 p.m.

The champion and runner-up in each pool will advance to the single-elimination finals, which will begin on Tuesday with games at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Two more games will be held on Wednesday, leading up to the title game at 6 p.m. Thursday.
