ELKINS – The Elkins 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars won a pair of games over Harrison County Saturday at Robin Harvey Memorial Field to claim the state crown.

In a best-of-three series, Elkins captured game one, 11-1, and game two, 13-7.

The team will now move on to the Ohio Valley Regional Tournament scheduled to begin July 24 in Elizabethtown, Ky.

“We absolutely hit the ball really well,” Elkins manager Steve Schumacher said. “From the top to the bottom of the lineup. Our defense was also very sound. We had good pitching and the entire team contributed to both wins.”

In game one, Matthew Gainer pitched five innings to earn the victory. He gave up one run on three hits, while striking out six batters.

Beau Bright paced the Elkins offense, going 3 for 4 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. Jeremy Cogar went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

In game two, Read Schumacher pitched 5 1/3 innings to notch the win. He gave up seven runs on eight hits, while striking out five hitters. At the plate, helped his own effort by going 2 for 5 with three runs scored.

Elkins collected 20 hits in the contest.

Jesse Williams led the Elkins offensive assault, going 4 for 5 with three doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs. Brett Smith, Gainer and Bright had three hits each.

Elkins is scheduled to play one game at 3:30 p.m. on July 24. The team will then play two games on July 25. Opposing teams have not been announced at press time.

Following pool play, the teams will be ranked and compete in a single-elimination tournament to determine who goes on to compete in the Babe Ruth League World Series.
