Elkins 15-year-olds vying for state title

ELKINS – Blake Loftis crushed a grand slam Friday to help the Elkins 15-year-old All Stars defeat Huntington Southeastern, 21-1, in the semi-final round of the Babe Ruth State Tournament at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Elkins will now face Beckley at noon today for the state championship. If needed, a second game will be played at 2:30 p.m. because Beckley must defeat Elkins twice to advance.

“The kids have really came together as a team,” Elkins coach Jack Crum said. “It was a full team effort. Even when we substituted in kids off the bench, our production didn’t drop off. I guess that’s why they call it an all star team – you can bring anyone in and not skip a beat.”

Greyson Teets pitched three innings to earn the victory. He struck out two batters and did not allow any runs scored. Adam Riggleman pitched two innings in relief, striking out three and giving up one run.

Loftis paced the Elkins’ offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run, five RBI’s, four runs scored and a walk. Matt Wilson went 4-for-5, with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Caleb Riggleman went 3-for-4 with a double and four runs scored. David Gainer went 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBI’s.

“Everybody, I mean everybody, hit the ball,” Crum said. “It was amazing. On top of that, the defense was incredible. We didn’t commit an error. Over the past five days, these kids have really bonded. It’s hard to get beat when you keep pounding the ball and playing error-free defense. The kids are confident and ready for the challenge.”

Elkins 14s Fall

CLARKSBURG – The Elkins 14-year-old All Stars lost to Huntington Southeastern, 8-7, in eight innings Friday in an elimination game of the Babe Ruth League State Tournament at Frank Loria Field.

“I’m proud of how our kids played,” Elkins coach Chris Broughton said. “We gave it our best effort. We took them to eight innings. That’s a win in my book. We’ll keep our heads up and get ready for next season.”

Luke Petrice paced the Elkins offense, going 3-for-3 with two triples and two runs scored. Ben McDonald and Hunter Lanham both went 2-for-4, while Nathan Channell, Luke Swecker and Russell Shiflett also recorded hits.
