Elkins Post 29 bows to Fairmont in ninth

FAIRMONT – Keegun McCullough’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Fairmont to an 8-7 win over Elkins on Tuesday night.

Fletcher DeVault started the ninth for Post 17 with a leadoff triple.

After consecutive intentional walks to load the bases, McCullough, a North Marion product, delivered the game winner.

Post 29 led 7-5 before Fairmont struck for two runs in the eighth to tie the game.

Doug Smith, Chance Price, Kevin McDermott and Colby Gainer had RBIs for Elkins, while two runs crossed on double steals and another on an error.

Sean Curtis took the loss in two innings of relief, allowing five runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out two.

Owen Arbogast went the first six innings, giving up three runs on five hits, fanning three and walking four.

McDermott went 2 for 4 and Al Johnson swiped two bases for Elkins.

“The kids played well and Owen pitched a good game,” Elkins Post 29 manager Chris George said. “We just made too many mistakes.

“It was two good teams playing, but in the end we beat ourselves with the critical mistakes.”

James Bolander earned the win in relief of Bailey Mohr for Fairmont in three innings of work. He gave up three runs on four hits, walked four and struck out four.

Elkins (15-5) will return to action at 5:30 p.m. today with a doubleheader at Potomac Valley.

“We need to bounce back from this one and get ready to play two more games (today),” George said.
