Fairmont rolls past Jefferson
HUTTONSVILLE -Fairmont erupted for six runs in the first inning en route to a 13-3 victory over Jefferson County in five innings in 10-11-year-old state tournament play Tuesday night at the Tygart Valley Little League Complex.
With the win, Fairmont captured the Pool C title and will face Pool A runner-up Bi-State at 8 p.m. today in the first round of the single-elimination championship round.
Another contest will be played at 5:30 p.m., with the Pool B runner-up facing Man.
Bridgeport, which captured the Pool A title, and the Pool B champion received byes and will face today’s winners starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
The title game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.
Jefferson County, meanwhile, went 0-2 in Pool C play, losing an 8-7 heartbreaker to Man in Saturday’s opener.
Regan Allinger gave Jefferson County a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Fairmont with a solo homer.
But Fairmont answered in the bottom of the frame, utilizing hits from Cameron Hines, Evan Dennison, Cole Peschl, Kayson Neeley, Angelo Manzo and Caden Miller to plate six runs.
A two-run homer by Jefferson County’s Will Ricketts in the second inning cut the margin to 6-3.
It would be the last runs of the evening for Jefferson County, however, as Fairmont plated two runs in the bottom of the second, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to end the game early due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Cameron Hines had an RBI single during the fifth-inning surge, while the final two runs crossed on a wild pitch to put the 10-run mercy rule in play.
Cullen Horowicz took the loss for Jefferson County. Zac Rose also saw time on the mound.
Dominic Viani was the winning pitcher. Hines and Jake Schmidt finished in relief.
