Slate pleases D&E coach
ELKINS – Davis &?Elkins College men’s basketball coach Chris Cottrell believes a tough non-conference slate of games will have his team prepared for the start of G-MAC action.
The Senators released their 2014-15 schedule on Wednesday.
The opener will be Nov. 15 at perennial NCAA Division II powerhouse Southern Indiana University.
“Overall, I feel our schedule will be challenging and prepare us for the rigors of G-MAC play,” Cottrell said. “Returning a young but experienced team, I think it is vital that we learn from last season and develop the mental toughness required to be successful in conference play, especially late in the season.”
After posting a 13-17 record in his first season, Cottrell will welcome back four starters and 65 percent of the scoring and rebounding from last season to go along with a promising recruiting class.
D&E will open the home season Nov. 19 against former WVIAC?rival Shepherd.
The Senators will play two additional home games in the McDonnell Center in November before taking to the road in December. They will begin G-MAC play at rival Alderson Broaddus on Dec. 6.
“I’m thrilled to be playing so many home games in the first semester and seeing our community and students from Davis & Elkins represent strong in the McDonnell Center, as they did at the end of last season,” Cottrell added. “I am already counting the days until our home opener against Shepherd.”
The Senators will wrap up the regular season on Feb. 28, 2015, at AB.
D&E announced its six-player recruiting class earlier this week. It includes talents from West Virginia, Florida, North Carolina and Maryland.
The newest Senators are Rickenjee Belleavue, Xavier Sewell, Shon’Dre Dukes Logan Coats and state natives John Riley (Lewis County) and Zach Fisher (Winfield).
