State tourney berths on the line for Elkins, Tygarts Valley
SUMMERSVILLE – The Elkins 11-12 year-old All-Stars hope to keep their bats swinging at 8 p.m. today when they face Braxton County in the Little League District 8 Pool B championship game.
The winner will advance to play in the state tournament that begins July 19 at Chapmanville.
“We need to continue to hit the ball consistently,” Elkins manager Matt Davis said. “Our pitching has been good. The kids have kept the ball in the location where we’ve asked. We have allowed the ball to be put in play and have made very limited mental errors on defense.”
Elkins defeated Tygarts Valley, 15-5 in five innings, on Saturday in the first round. The team then defeated Clay County, 14-1 in four innings, on Monday in the second round.
“As a team, we’ve played hard and smart,” Davis said. “Overall the kids have been great and the parental support has been outstanding. We hope to continue to represent Elkins Little League at the next level.”
Davis anticipates a tough matchup against Braxton County, which was the Pool A runner-up.
He said the team has speed on the base paths and good defense.
“Braxton County will be a tough opponent for us,” Davis said. “They pitch and field well. They also look to steal bases in every inning.”
In today’s first game at 5:30 p.m., Tygarts Valley, the Pool B runner-up, will battle Pool A champion and host team Summersville.
Tygarts Valley rebounded from the opening-round loss to Elkins to defeat Clay County, 7-0, on Sunday.
