Tourney runs end for All-Stars

ELKINS- The Elkins 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars saw a successful run in the Ohio Valley Regional Tournament come to an end on Saturday.

After defeating host team Elizabethtown, 13-3, in the first game of the single-elimination format of the tourney, Elkins lost to Jasper, Ind., 16-1 in the quarterfinals.

During the tourney, Elkins earned wins over Crown Point, Ind., Mattoon, Ill., and Elizabethtown.

Elkins broke open a 1-1 deadlock against Elizabethtown by plating five runs in the second and two more in the third.

Jon Phillips and Beau Bright each had three RBIs for Elkins. Matthew Gainer worked six innings to earn the win, allowing eight hits and fanning three.

Jasper erupted for seven runs in the third inning en route to the victory over Elkins in quarterfinal play.

In the win over Mattoon, Jesse Williams cracked four hits, while Read Schumacher and Jeremy Coger had three each. Adam Hart added three RBIs, while Austin Lanham and Williams each drove in a pair.

Other members of the 13-year-old All-Star squad included Brett Smith, Cole Crumm, Hunter Mouse and Thomas Talkington

Steve Schumacher served as the squad’s manager, while Jimmy Gainer and Jesse Williams were his assistants.

In 15-year-old Ohio Valley Regional tourney play, Elkins lost a 9-8 decision to Somerset/Puaski, Ky., in the first game of single-elimination play Saturday at Marinette, Wis. Somerset/Puaski plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Members of the 15-year-old All-Star team included Blake Loftis, Will Crumm, Cory Gillespie, Greyson Teets, Caleb Riggleman, Adam Riggleman, Daniel Hamrick, Rece Wamsley, Ben Huffman, Shane Bodkin, David Gainer, Kyle Riggleman and Matt Wilson.

Jack Crumm served as team manager and was assisted by Ron Huffman and Daniel Hamrick.
