Buccaneers fall to Morgantown

MORGANTOWN – Ben Vester notched a hat trick Tuesday to help Morgantown defeat non-conference rival Buckhannon-Upshur, 3-2, in boys varsity soccer action.

“We came out fast and strong,” B-U coach Mike Donato said. “We scored quickly on a very nice dribble and finish. We had a chance at the end, we just couldn’t get one in on them.”

Buckhannon scored first, when Tyler Shreve found the net on an assist from Trey Short at the 5-minute mark. Morgantown answered back with two goals by Vester to make the score 2-1 at the half.

In the second half, Vester scored his third goal at the 51-minute mark. Not to be outdone, B-U’s Josh Tenney notched a goal at the 69-minute mark on an assist from Trey Short.

“Morgantown really picked up the intensity,” Donato said. “They passed and moved the ball very well. They forced us to bunch up the mid-field. Two of their three goals came on through the middle. We made an adjustment and got into a groove. We out shot them in the second half, we just couldn’t find that extra one to get the tie.”

Buckhannon-Upshur (3-2) will host Lincoln at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
