Lady Tigers cruise in opener

ELKINS – The Elkins High School girls soccer team found the net early and often in cruising past Martinsburg 7-1 in the season opener for both teams Friday night at the EHS field.

The Lady Tigers erupted for six goals in the first half – four coming from junior forward Hailea Harper – that allowed coach Scott Cutright to substitute freely over the final 40 minutes of play.

“This was a good start to the season,” Cutright said. “We have a lot girls back from last year and they played well, along with the younger girls that got on the field.”

“We’ll take a lot of positives from this one but still have a lot of work to do.”

Junior midfielder Grace Lindsay notched the first goal of the season for the Tigers 6:00 into the match.

After Harper collected her first score to make it 2-0, Lindsay Roy followed with another tally.

Harper then netted the next three goals to make it 6-0 at the break.

Karli Hopwood added a second-half score for Elkins.

“Our forwards did well for us in converting their scoring opportunities,” Cutright said.

“Hopefully that will continue as the season goes along.”

Sophomore Alexis Brandon notched the win in goal.

“Alexis did a great job in her first varsity start,” Cutright said.

The Bulldogs tallied their lone score with 13:00 remaining in the match.

Elkins will remain home at noon today to battle Musselman.

“We have a quick turnaround and have to be ready to go against Musselman,” Cutright said.

Martinsburg will stay in the area today as it will visit Grafton at 2 p.m.
